Two familiar faces will be stepping into new roles in the new year.
Effective January 13, 2025, Our Lady of Lourdes Principal Kat Grootjes and Immaculata Regional High School Principal Robert Plaxton will add District Principals of Catholic Independent Schools of Nelson Diocese to their titles.
Grootjes selected for inclusive education and early learning
In her new position of District Principal, Grootjes’ main areas of focus will be supporting inclusive education and early learning.
Since starting her educator journey in 1999, Grootjes has worked in a variety of roles in Alberta, British Columbia, and England.
“I chose to work in education because I’ve always loved helping others learn new skills, and I was inspired by a high school teacher who made learning exciting and engaging,” Grootjes said. ”That experience showed me the impact a great teacher can have and sparked my passion for helping others to grow, thrive, and discover their potential.”
For Grootjes, working in education isn’t just about sharing her passion for learning, but also her faith.
“What I love most about Catholic education is the opportunity to nurture a safe and caring environment where students can grow academically, spiritually, and personally, while sharing and living out our faith together,” she said.
As she prepares to enter this new chapter, Grootjes is eager to collaborate with her fellow educators across CISND in order to foster inclusive learning environments and support the growth of early learning centres.
She will also focus on strengthening literacy and ensuring every student “has the opportunity to thrive in our CISND schools."

Plaxton to support human resources and technology
With more than 25 years of experience in education, Plaxton was eager to take supporting learning at CISND to new heights in his new position as District Principal.
“I also look forward to an opportunity to grow in my understanding of our diocesan education system,” he said.
Plaxton has worked in public and independent schools, but has found a special appreciation for what Catholic schools have to offer their families.
“Educators have the privilege of sharing the love of Christ with our students. We also teach a curriculum that is infused with the truth of God,” Plaxton said. “Our schools tend to be smaller than our public school counterparts; this facilitates a sense of family and belonging in our school settings.”
Like many fellow educators, Plaxton has always been passionate about inspiring his students, looking for those “ah-ha” moments throughout his career.
“I love the energy they bring daily and I love their natural inquisitiveness,” he added.

These new part time roles will commence in the new year.
“We are blessed to have both dedicated educators stepping into their new roles,” said CISND
Superintendent Pamela Guilbault. “Their skills and commitment will strengthen our mission and
support the important work taking place across CISND.”
